Water-solublefullerenes,C60[N(CH2)2OH]12,C60[N(CH2)2NH2]10,and C60[N(CH2)2COOH]10,were synthesized by improved nitrene chemistry[1],which C60 was reacted with azide small molecules(N3(CH2)2OH,N3(CH2)2NH2 and N3(CH2)2COOH).The three products were familiar with the size excepted the surface charge character. The cytotoxicity of the water-soluble fullerene species is a sensitive function of surface derivatization; in three different human cell lines(including MDA,HeLa and MCF-7),the median lethal dose of fullerene changed over 3 orders of magnitude with relatively minor alterations in fullerene structure [2].
