Over 60% of ongoing cell therapy interventions utilize autologous and allogeneic adult stem cells,a large proportion of which are based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).Although a precise definition of MSCs is currently intensely debated and remains to be refined,MSCs are generally accepted as a group of tissue-specific multipotent progenitors responsible for the development,maintenance and physiological repair of bone,cartilage and fat tissues.Culture-expanded MSCs are now used clinically to treat graft-versus-host disease and to induce tissue regeneration in musculoskeletal and cardiovascular disorders.However,clinical outcomes are often inconsistent and unpredictable.
