Introduction The distinction in the title of this lecture refers to a radical shift in the focus of sociological research on the curriculum.In order to provide a context for understanding this shift, I will trace the changes in my own thinking about the curriculum from my first book Knowledge and Control which was published in 1971, to my 2007 book Bringing Knowledge Back In which will shortly be published in Mandarin, translated by Professor Xie of Tsinghua University.
