The commercial scallop Pecten fumatus has been the basis of a fishery since about 1920.The animals biology is straightforward.It is a functional hermaphrodite which spawns from late winter to early summer.Following settlement, growth of spat is fast but variable.Most animals reach a harvestable size of 85 mm (shell length) in 2-3 years, but stunting has been observed in some areas.Maximum longevity is thought to be in the order of 5-6 years, but there are reports of much older animals from early research reports.Production from the fishery is summarised in Figure 1.
