  A new method for measuring low-molecular-weight thiols, including cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), glutathione (GSH), 2-Mercaptoethylamine (MEA), 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and 2-Mercaptoethanol (ME) with high performance liquid chromatogram, has been developed, in which N-[2-(2-ethoxy)ethyl]-4-nitro-l,8-naphthalimide (NEE-NNI) was employed as the pre-column fluorescence derivatization reagent.The derivation was conducted under mild conditions and the derivate products could be detected by laser-induced fluorescence detector with the excitation and emission wavelengths at 473 nm and 525 nm, respectively.A baseline separation of these six thiol derivatives was achieved on RP-C18 column within 30 min using water and acetonitrile as mobile phase.Good linearity was obtained for all analysts over their respective physiologically relevant concentrations with the detection limits at about picomole (S/N of 3).
