The current PEMFC electrodes are comprised of a matrix of primarily amorphous carbon black grains, providing electronic conductivity, nanosized Pt electrocatalyst particles supported on this carbon black, and an electrolyte network of perfluorosulfonate ionomer providing proton conductivity. The current electrodes can provide the desired performance and durability, but only at high Pt loadings and, thus,at costs exceeding those needed to achieve commercialization of the fuel cells.
