Metastabilities in CIGS-based Photovoltaic Devices

　　Thin film solar cells based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 family compounds (CIGS) have reached over 20% efficiency in the lab and full size PV-modutes are being produced on an industrial scale by several companies.In many respects, however, the excellent performance is much ahead of the understanding of electro-optical properties of CIGS materials and still using try-and-error approach may slow down future progress.Like for most semiconductor devices, also for CIGS-based solar cells defect related issues are of primary importance.This contribution gives an overview of defect investigations in CIGS devices and their influence on device performance.Special attention is paid to a metastale behaviour of CIGS solar cells and modules: firstly, a classification of metastabilities observed in different kind of CIGS solar cells is given, and secondly, the influence of deposition conditions of a back contact, absorber, buffer and window materials on a metasatble behaviour is discussed.
