A moderately thermophilic bacterial strain, Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans, was used to solubilize rock phosphate (RP) containing pyrite (FeS2) as an energy substrate.Experimental results showed that the rate of phosphorus solubilized by the moderate thermophile was more effective when compared with a mesophilic bacterial strain, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.The bacterium of S.thermosulfidooxidans is a facultative heterotrophic bacterium, and the bacterium can not only solubilize RP by oxidizing Fe2+ and S0 under autotrophic conditions, but also utilizing yeast extract and glucose as its organic carbon source under heterotrophic conditions.The biosolubilization of phosphorus from RP by S.thermosulfidooxidans was influenced markedly by initial pH, temperature, RP concentration and dosage of pyrite addition, and the selection of suitable value of these conditions during the solubilizing process would be benefit to the solubilization of RP.
