Occult HEV infection among blood donors from 6 regions of China

　　To assess the extent of occult HEV infection among blood donors, we randomly tested 45980 blood donors from 6 regions of China (Wuzhou, Shaoxing, Beijing, Wuhan, Quzhou and Xiamen) over 5 years period between 2002 and 2007 for serum IgM and IgG anti-HEV.Samples tested positive for IgM anti-HEV were further tested for HEV RNA by nested PCR.IgG anti-HEV and IgM anti-HEV seroprevalence differ between different region, being highest for Shaoxing and lowest for Quzhou, and were higher for male than female.Overall IgG HEV seroprevalence is 47.35%, IgM anti-HEV seroprevalence, 1.48%.The rate of HEV viremia among blood donors was estimated to be 0.1% to 0.2%, but it was as high as 1.6% among donors in Shaoxing.Most virus detected was made up with about equal proportion of genotype 1 and 4, except for Shaoxing, which was made up largely with genotype 1.These results suggest that significant risk of transfusion acquired hepatitis E prevails in HEV endemic areas.
