　　To ensure the safe and efficient operation of engineering structures, the idea of structurally-integrated sensors to monitor the health of the host has generated wide interest worldwide.A spectrum of techniques and approaches to structural health monitoring has been reported in the literature.Optical fibres, originally introduced for the telecommunication industry, have attracted significant attention in recent years in their use as sensors for structural health monitoring applications.
