In 2006 the EU 27 produced 5143 Mt of greenhouse gases. This was 7.7% lower than the baseline in 1990, however, new targets being negotiated by member states and proposals being discussed by delegates at the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen will commit Europe to very much greater reductions in emissions in the coming decades.Agriculture is the second most important source of greenhouse gases after energy production and in 2006 was responsible for 9% of annual emissions. The sector is therefore expected to contribute to emissions reductions at the same time as maintaining high levels of productivity and environmental protection. This paper will examine the opportunities for greenhouse gas mitigation using a network of experimental sites across the continent. The relative importance of management and climate in controlling greenhouse gas emissions and the importance of different greenhouse gases in different management systems will be compared.
