Impurity removal using ion exchange adsorption for purification of biologically derived 2,3-butanedi

　　Salt removal is an important pretreatment step in the purification process of biologically derived 2,3-butanediol and should be carried out prior to concentration step to prevent the occurrence of viscous slurry or severe precipitations during evaporation.Ion exchange adsorption was used to effectively remove the impurities in the fermentation broth such as inorganic salts and organic acids.The adsorption behavior of target ions and other microbial products was observed with the time for fermentation broth to pass ion exchange columns in laboratory scale.After the column operation, more than 98 % of salts in fermentation broth could be effectively removed.However, the recovery ratio of 2,3-butanediol in the column effluent was only about 80%, which means large portion of 2,3-butanediol is retained in the column inside after the column operation.The ion exchange resins used for salts removal were washed with water and the recovery ratio of 2,3-butanediol was measured according to the amount of water used.It was found that the washed water should be essentially reused for next washing operations to save utility cost due to the large amount of water to attain high recovery ratio of 2,3-butanediol(> 95%).
