@@ Introduction. In Suzhou Chinese, when the citation form of the initial syllable is the dipping tone ([HLM]) in a disyllabic word, the sandhi form of it can be either high level or high falling. The sandhi pattern of these disyllabic words is either [HL.L] (e.g. [.inHLvo.L] “to believe”) or [HH.L] (e.g. [.inHHfo.L] “the envelope”) in natural speech. These phenomena are investigated and analyzed within the framework of Optimality Theory in this paper.
