Cone snails produce some of the smallest and most selective ligands (conotoxins) known to act on key membrane receptors.An unusually high number of these small cysteine rich peptides have remarkable effects including antinociception,myocardial protection and anti-epileptic activity,with some even capable of accelerating recovery from nerve injury.However,despite this high therapeutic potential,the isolation and target identification of cone snail venom peptides remains slow and often challenging.In this work,we describe a combined transcriptomic and proteomic strategy to more rapidly uncover conotoxin diversity in the venom of a worm hunting (Conus miles) and mollusc hunting (Conus marmoreus) cone snail.Using 454 pyrosequencing technology,we obtained transcriptomic data from one single specimen of both species.
