Background: From 1997 to 2009, there were 1050 aged 15-24 adolescents committed suicide in Hong Kong, the suicide rates among these 14 years were between 5.9 per 100,000 (1999 the lowest) and 12.5 per 100,000 (2002 the highest).Thereafter, the youth suicide rate reduced steadily to 7.1 per 100,000 in 2005, and increased again to 9.2 per 100,000 in 2008.According to latest data from Narcotics Division, Security Bureau, HKSAR, the number of reported drug abusers of age under 21 was continuously increasing over 16% per year.With the detailed official suicide data from the Coroners Court, HKSAR, this study aimed to examine the relationship between drug use behaviour and the risk factors for youth suicide in 2002-2008.Methods: Official suicide data was available from the Coroners Court for the period 2002-2008.The individual files of suicide included socio-demographic information, witness reports by police officers, medical and psychiatric reports, autopsy and toxicology reports, suicide notes, as well as insurance policies.To study the relationship between evidence of drug abuse of youth suicide deceased and demographic characteristics, medical, and psychiatric profiles, Cross tabulations and Chi-square X2 tests were conducted, and the statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.Results: In 2002-2008, 591 aged 15-24 adolescents killed themselves.The gender (male to female) ratio is 1.67.70% of them chose to end their lives by jumping from a height, which is also the most common suicide method in Hong Kong.Comparing with ten covariates between drug use behaviours, gender (p =0.029), educational level (p =0.003), employment status (p =0.000), and previously attempted suicide (p =0.001) were statistically significant.While the other six covariates (marital status (p =0.152), sexual orientation (p =0.642), psychiatric problem (p =0.155), medical illness (p =0.165), evidence of family problem (p =0.870) and family suicide history (p =0.692) were statistically insignificant.Conclusion: Gender, education level, employment status and attempt suicide history were independently associated with drug use behaviour in youth suicide.Therefore, a healthy life, studying and employment opportunity is important elements for young adults to have a positive living style.This information could help to develop a strategy of suicide prevention among Hong Kong adolescents.
