Proteins play an important role in biomedicine, ranging from basic biomedical research to diagnosis and therapy of diseases. Many of these applications depend on the ability to add new functions through the covalent attachment of functional groups, such as polymers, drugs, imaging agents,to proteins.Typically, these groups are attached to random locations on the protein surface through the modification of the reactive side chains of protein residues such as lysine and cysteine.
