The effects of herbaceous biochar on the metabolic profiles of the microbial community in the maize rhizosphere were examined for the first time.Biolog technology was applied to measure the unique profile (CLPP profile) for each community which include diversity and types of single carbon substrates which can support growth and metabolism of microorganisms.Four types of commercially available BIOLOG plates (GP, GN,FF and ECO) ,which contain 95 and 31 x3 single carbon substrates, were used and compared by their ability to determine any differences in carbon substrate utilisation profile for biochar and control samples. The effect of the choice of Biolog plate used in the assay on the outcomes of comparison of rhizosphere samples was elucidated.Overall study has been shown, that metabolic profile microorganisms community in soil augmented with biochar differs from control.Types of substrates specific for biochar-associated community were highly reflective of plant-balanced/beneficial specialisations of such community with lower plant pathogenic activities compare to control soil rhizosphere. It was evident, that specialisation of the microorganisms on the functional level within established ecosystem of "biochar-root-soil-microorganisms" involved in healthy and mutually beneficial interaction between microorganisms and plant tissue.

The structure of biochar is essentially amorphous, containing randomly arranged planes of carbon sheets littered with acidic (carboxyl groups, lactones or lactols, and hydroxyl groups of phenolic char
