The municipal solid waste(MSW)disposal facility is considered one of the main greenhouse gas sources. While landfill gas generated in facilities that are equipped with collection systems can be collected and utilized or burned, the dumping sites are generating and emitting landfill gas directly into atmosphere due to lack of effective management. Moreover,it is not possible to install necessary collection systems for most dumping sites. The objectives of this study were to estimate the fugitive emission from dumping sites and to discuss the mitigation possibility via biocovers.Based on official statistics data on formal waste management, the quantity of MSW historically disposed of in dumping sites was estimated. The IPCC model was used to quantify the emissions from dumping sites, and the parameters were determined considering the characteristics of Chinese MSW.Results showed that the fugitive methane emissions accounted for 47.5%of total emissions from the waste sector in 2005.Field experiments on biocovers of biochar-amended soil and aged refuse were conducted to provide technical options for mitigating methane emissions from dumping sites.
