In order to investigate the effects of molybdenum (Mo) on the ovarian functions, a sub-acute toxicity test was performed in this study.The ICR strain of adult female mice was exposed to Mo by free access to the distilled water containing the Mo at 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/L for 14 days.Compared to control, the M Ⅱ oocyte morphology, ovary index, ovulation were improved by Mo at 5 mg/L, but were negatively affected by Mo at 40 mg/L.Abnormal mitochondria morphologies were observed in ovarian cells at ≥ 20 mg/L groups.All these alterations were accompanied with the changes in SOD, GPx and MDA levels in ovaries.In conclusion, Mo affects the oocyte quality possiblythrough regulating the ovarian oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner.Especially, the Mo improves ovarian functions at a suitable concentration, which might be a novel drug candidate for the treatment of female infertility.
