Stem cells are generally characterized as undifferentiated cells which occur in all multicellular organisms during all stages of ontogenesis.They possess the potential of long term self-renewing and capability of differentiation into specialized cells.They perform important roles during embryogenesis and in the mature organism they provide a supply of cells necessary for regeneration, growth and repair of terminally differentiated cells.
