The basic force causing physical adsorption on activated carbon is Van der Waals force,resulting from intermolecular attraction that exists between all molecules and is extremely short-ranged.This property finds application in development of cryopumps for pumping gases.In a fusion machine large volume of exhaust gases include helium and hydrogen isotopes.To pump the gas load conventional mechanical pumps have limitation operating in high magnetic field surroundings in the viscinity of machine.
