The professionalization of interpreting in the West started with the action of a professional association (AIIC) in favor of conference interpreting under uniquely favorable market circumstances, on which interpreters can no longer count.Beyond conference interpreting, in the professionalization of interpreting in the 21st century, professional organizations and educational institutions have a key role to play as holders of knowledge about field conditions, practices and expectations from employers, and their input and guidance should be sought by academic training institutions.The type of research most relevant to professionalization is the exploration and analysis of such field conditions, practices and expectations.
