Sophorolipids are a class of microbially derived glycolipids that hold promise as anti-inflammatory agents.Sophorolipids and their derivatives have been shown to decrease (1) sepsis related mortality and (2) asthmatic severity in pre clinical models of disease.Mechanisms of disease suppression include reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines,suppression of pro-inflammatory gene expression and immunomodulation of adhesion molecules and toll-like receptors.Administration of these agents have shown no adverse effects in experimental systems at supra therapeutic doses.Sophorolipids can be easily chemoenzymatically modified to yield derivatives tailored to achieve maximal therapeutic effects in inflammatory disease.
