Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects chronically over 350 million people globally, and these chronic HBV carriers are at risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.Currently, interferon-α and nucleoside analogs such as lamivudine and adefovir dipivoxil have been approved for the treatment of HBV, whereas the IFN is effective only in less than 30% of the chronic carriers, and substantial resistance to nucleoside analogs during the slow phase of HBV elimination limits its long-term treatment of HBV infection.
