Lymnaea stagnalis is a widespread Holarctic species of aquatic pulmonate snails (family Lymnaeidae) notorious for its high intraspecific variation. We studied the phylogeographic structure of L.stagnalis as well as its morphological variation.Molecular genetic analyses detected phylogenetic discontinuities that are not reflected by morphologically-based taxonomy. The analysis of distribution of individuals through genetic trees reveals complete incongruence between conchologically distinct intraspecific groups of L.stagnalis (sometimes these were treated as separate species) and the branching pattern of our trees.
