Design is a complex activity,and design processes which are composed of sequencing activities vary widely from one organization to another reflecting the cultures of design teams.It is widely recognized that the capture,storage,and retrieval of design knowledge is one of the major challenges for the next generation of product knowledge management.In this paper,according to the actuality and deficiency of design process management,a new design process management method was present.In the method,design process was divided into three management layers:harmonizing layer,purpose layer and action layer.Hereinto,using Project Management and Workflow Management for references,we introduce a new tool named design guideline to control the information flow and knowledge flow between design activities.In order to construct this model,an item-oriented information model is established for design process knowledge management,which realizes the knowledge capture and reuse from customer requirement to product retirement,involving every product lifecycle stage; Then,considering the operation features in every design process layer,tasks are divided into four categories,such as module design task,part design task,behavior task and abstract task,and the relevant models are designed subsequently; Finally,the framework of design guideline management system is present,and an example of engine design process is used to illustrate the efficiency of this new method of design process knowledge management.It is approved that the design guideline can accumulate design process knowledge and improve design efficiency.
