Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central irreversible blindness in elderly.Although the exact etiology of AMD remains unclear, local inflammation and innate immunity have been implicated in disease pathogenesis and development.While AMD is not a classical inflammatory disease like uveitis, inflammatory cells, in particular macrophages are often found near or within AMD lesions.
