  Block copolymers offer the possibility to prepare isoporous membranes,if the self-assembling process in a solution is combined in a suitable way with a freezing step,as it can be achieved by precipitating an appropriately designed block copolymer solution into a nonsolvent.This can lead to highly regular membrane surfaces which have open pores of very narrow size distribution.These selective layers are supported by a less regular,more porous substructure of the same material acting as a mechanical support.Both flat sheet membranes(Fig.1)and hollow fibre membranes(Fig.2)will be discussed in terms of preparation conditions.Characterisation is carried out by scanning electron microscopy,Small angle X-ray scattering,rheology,and water flux.
