Electrochemistry of MoFe and VFe Nitrogenases

Nitrogenases are the only enzymes known to reduce molecular nitrogen to ammonia.Although the biochemistry and structural biology of nitrogenases have been widely studied,they have been difficult to interface with electrode surfaces to study their electrochemistry.This talk will discuss molecular and materials strategies for mediated and direct electron transfer of nitrogenases with carbon electrodes.These enzymes are very oxygen senstive,so the talk will also discuss strategies for protecting the enzymes from oxygen.Finally,this talk will focus on discussing the ability of MoFe nitrogenase to reduce nitrogen,nitrite,azide,and protons,as well as the ability of VFe nitrogenase to reduce carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons.
