Down-regulation of PERP (p53 apoptosis effector related to PMP-22) correlates with the aggressive (monosomy 3) type of uveal melanoma (UM), the most common primary intraocular tumour in adults.Signalling through the major tumour suppressor p53 pathway was reported as compromised in UM, but not due to defects upstream or at the level of p53, therefore pointing towards deregulation downstream of p53.
