Senegal,situated on the western tip of Africa,covers an area of76,000square miles(196,781square kilometers).It is bordered on the north by Mauritania,on the east by Mali,on the south by Guinea and Guinea-Bissau,and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean.The long,narrow Republic of the Gambia is approximately two hundred miles long,surrounded by Senegal's southern region.Agriculture is based largely on the cultivation of peanuts,millet,and sorghum.Like most Sahelian countries,Senegal has an important livestock sector that periodically is decimated by drought.Niokolo Koba National Park is situated in the southeast and is one of the most important reserves for large mammals in West Africa.
