Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) is nowadays largely diffused and its benefit of the outcome in utero and after birth is under evaluation.The impact of the prenatal diagnosis is variable in different types of congenital lesions, and also according to the gestational age at diagnosis and presence of associated anomalies.Prenatal diagnosis of complex CHD or associated to severe chromosomal or extracardiac anomalies will not substantially change the prognosis, while it is very useful in cases of ductus dependent anomalies, with a possibility of a planned delivery in specialized centers and optimal conditions for the surgical care.Especially, the cases with prenatal diagnosis of transposition of great arteries were found to have lesser postnatal morbidity and mortality than those diagnosed postnatally.Cardiosurgical results are definitely improved with respect to the past.
