Purpose:To evaluate a Hybrid IMRT/VMAT technique which combined intensity modulated radiotherapy(IMRT)and volumetricmodulated arc therapy(VMAT)as a treatment option for the radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).Materials and methods:Treatment plans were analyzed for 9 patients with NPC.The patients were treated by IMRT and VMAT,respectively.IMRT plans were generated by using custom nine equally spaced coplanar beams and VMAT Plans were designed with a single arc.And then they were re-planned by a hybrid technique that concurrently combines step-and-shoot IMRT with 3 beams and VMAT with 2 partial arcs.Dosimetric comparisons between IMRT,VMAT,and Hybrid IMRT/VMAT plans were analyzed in terms of coverage,homogeneity and conformity of PTV,sparing of OARs,delivery time,monitor units(Mus),and the pass ratios of quality assurance(QA).Results:The comparison of Hybrid IMRT/VMAT and IMRT showed that no significant difference in target coverage and sparing of OARs.Compared with VMAT,hybrid technique provided better sparing of larynx and trachea,which is important to improve the quality of life for of patients.Mus,delivery time and the QA passing rates of Hybrid IMRT/VMAT were between IMRT and VMAT.Conclusions:Our results indicated that Hybrid IMRT/VMAT provided better sparing of the larynx and the cervical trachea,better pass ratios of QA than VMAT,and shorter delivery time,fewer Mus than IMRT.Hybrid technique provides a conceptual middle ground between IMRT and VMAT for NPC radiotherapy.
