In many situations vasoconstriction depends on coordinated activity of vascular smooth muscle.One such situation is during vascular oscillation (vasomotion), where oscillation originates from individual smooth muscle cells and becomes synchronised among the cells in the vessel wall.The basis for these oscillations is spontantoues release of calcium from intracellular stores.Based on calcium-induced calcium release this calcium rise travels as a wave along the cell.Reaching the plasma membrane, it may activate calcium-activated chloride channels, causing inward (depolarising) currents.
