Background: Lanzhou city, located in the Gansu Province of China, is developed depending on Yellow River.Along the up-stream of the Lanzhou reach of the Yellow River, a district named Xigu is the most important industrial base of Lanzhou.The pollution of heavy metals was more and more serious.The pollution of cadmium (Cd(Ⅱ)) was middle level pollution which Average Contaminative Index (ACI) is 2.62.Cd was taken up through magnesium system in bacteria cells.It can disrupt the function of protein once is binding to sulfhydryl groups and broke the intracellular DNA can occur through binding of cadmium to nucleotides.Furthermore, cadmium affects cell proliferation; differentiation, apoptosis and increases oncogene activation to carcinogenesis.So Cd was one of serious heavy metals pollution in Xigu district.
