Osteogenesis and angiogenesis are two closely correlated processes during bone growth, development, remodelling and repair.Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an essential mediator during the process of angiogenesis, which plays an important role in bone formation including endochondral ossification and intramembranous ossification. In this presentation, we will review our previous reports on the role of VEGF in ossification. It is shown conclusively that VEGF is able to promote ossification by either inducing neovascularization or by directly affecting bone cells.
