Synopsis The neutral beam diagnostics in fusion research heavily relies upon knowledge of interactions between plasma constituents (primarily heavy particles) and fast neutrals.Unlike the field-free case, excitation of the fast atoms takes place in a strong translational electric field which necessitates significant modifications of standard methods for calculation of collisional cross sections. We present a recently developed atomic model for ion-atom interactions in magnetically confined fusion plasmas and describe its application to analysis of beam emission in tokamak experiments.
