There are six medically important venomous snakespecies in the present Taiwan. Snakes that present hemorrhagic venom in Taiwan are Viridiviperastejnegeri(formerly Trimeresursu Stejnegeri,Taiwanbamboo viper or green habu),Protobothrops mucrosquamatus(formerly Trimeresursumucrosquamatus,Taiwan habu),Deinagkistrodonacutus(hundred-pacer),and Daboia russeliisiamensis. The hemorrhagic venom causes local tissueswelling that may even progressive to developcompartment syndrome. In patients with severe tissueswelling, surgical intervention such as debridement, fasciotomy or graft may be needed. Snakes that poseneurotoxic venom are Naja atra(Chinese or Taiwancobra)and Bungarus multicinctus(Taiwan bandedkrait ).The neurotoxic venom also provokes respiratorydistress and some other manifestations such asdiplopia, dysarthria and extremity paralysis. However, the neurologic signs mentioned above mainly arecaused by Taiwan Banded Krait and Taiwan cobra to aless extent. The Taiwan cobra may cause direct tissuedamage. Therefore, surgical intervention such asdebridement, fasciotomy or graft also may be needed.
