For reactions that are highly exothermic or highly endothermic, thermal management can be a pinch point in the design of a reactor. For these reactions, traditional packed beds can provide a dissadvantage in terms of the reactors ability to quickly remove/add heat in order to avoid large temperature deviations within a packed bed.A catalyst support structure known as metal microfibrous entrapped catalyst (MFEC) was previously studied by our group for the exothermic reaction of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS).It was discovered that the temperature deviation in a 41 mm ID reactor was only 6.4℃ for the MFEC reactor, whereas there was a deviation of 460℃ in the equivalent packed bed.
