The effects of essential oils from 12 plant species [Illicium verum Hook, Ocimum basilicum L., Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd, Cinnamomum verum J.Presl, Cymbopogon nardus (L.)Rendle, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr.&L.M.Perry, Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh, Citronella citratus, Metha cordifolia Opiz, Pinus palustris (china), Salacca wallichiana C.Mart and Zingiber officinale Roscoe] against two weed species [barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli L.) and wild pea (Phaseolus lathyroides L.)] were investigated on their seed germination and seedling growth. The result showed that essential oil from S.aromaticum was the strongest effective inhibiting seed germination and seedling growth of barnyardgrass and wild pea.At concentrations of 6 microlitre/petri dish caused complete inhibition on germination and seedling growth of both bioassay species.A.farnesiana, C.verum, C.nardus, E.camaldulensis and C.citratus were moderate inhibition effects (32.5-72.5%inhibition) and I.verum, M.cordifolia, P.palustris, S.wallichiana and Z.officinale were less effect on seed germination and seedling growth of barnyard grass. In continuous experiment, natural herbicide product from S.aromaticum essential oil in emulsifier formulation (NSEC) was developed and evaluated its efficacy compared with original S.aromaticum essential oil.The results showed that NSEC had stronger inhibition effect on seed germination and seedling growth of E.crusgalli and P.lathyroides than that original S.aromaticum essential oil at concentrations of 1.5, 3 and 6 microlitre/petri dish tested. The effects of NSEC at concentration of 3 microlitre/petri dish caused complete inhibition on germination of P.lathyroides and 98.75% of E.crusgalli and caused complete inhibition on shoot length and root length of P.lathyroides and 97.33% and 94.61% of E.crusgalli.
