Isopropanol (IPA) forms an azeotrope with water around 68% by mole under atmospheric pressure.Azeotropic mixtures such as IPA-water or ethanol-water can be dehydrated through an extractive distillation process using ethylene glycol (EG) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. In this study, modeling and comparison works have been performed for two-column and three-column configurations using EG and DMSO,respectively.Two-column configuration consists of an extractive distillation column and a solvent recovery column, whereas three-column configuration composes of a concentration column,an extractive distillation column and a solvent recovery column. We conclude that three-column configuration was superior to two-column configuration in the aspect of the total reboiler heat duties. We have completed the optimization works for the reduction of the total reboiler heat duty using the concentration of IPA at concentrator top as a manipulated variable.
