We analyze the dephasing effects on the backscattering behavior of the helical surface states. We show that dephasing effects can cause backscattering and derive the backscattering cross-section for both short-range and long-range potentials. For the latter case, the backscattering cross-section becomes extremely large around the Dirac point. This large backscattering behavior can lead to the gap-like features found in recent experiments.
