Inflorescence architecture ,pedicel length, and stomatal patterningin Arabidopsis thaliana are specified by intertissue communication mediated by ERECTA (ER) and its signaling ligands in the EPIDERMALPATTERNING FACTOR-LIKE (EPFL) family of secreted cysteine-rich peptides. Here we identified and characterized BnEPFL6 from Brassica napus.Heterologous expression of this gene under the double enhanced CaMV promoter (D35S) in Arabidopsis resulted in shortened filaments with up-regulated expression of BAM1, CLV1, and MPK3 and down-regulated expression of PIN7.Genetic analysis indicated that BnEPFL6 and other genes involved in the BnEPFL6-mediated signaling cascade were expressed in a linear pathway in filaments. The expression pattern of BnEPFL6 in the shortened filaments of four male sterile B.napus lines (98A, 86A, SA, and Z11A) was similar to that of BnEPFL6 in the transgenic Arabidopsis lines. These observations reveal that BnEPFL6 is important for filament elongation and may also affect organ morphology and floral organ specification via a BnEPFL6-mediated cascade.
