functional materials and diverse biomimetic devices ranging from artificial organs to swim fins,and even helicopters.The insights into such technologies stem from the first principles of how the nature works on any scale in space and in time.In mimicking biological systems that have the ability to sense,regulate,grow,react,and regenerate in a highly responsive and self-adaptive manner.The significance of the liquid crystalline state in the living organisms,for example,biological membranes consisting of lipid bilayers,has been widely recognized from the viewpoints of physics and chemistry of interfaces and transport phenomena.
