  The simultaneous removal of nitrate and sulfide is mainly conducted by a microbial consortium of nitrate-reducing-sulfide-oxidizing bacteria(NR-SOB).These microorganisms are characterized by reducing nitrate and oxidizing sulfide to elemental sulfur or sulfate depending on the molar ratio of sulfide to nitrate in the medium.
