For a linear algebraic group G,a versal G-variety can be viewed as a birational version of a classifying space for G.However,unlike universal objects,they fail to satisfy various uniqueness properties.In particular,different versal G-varieties can have different dimensions.The essential dimension of an algebraic group is the minimal dimension of a versal G-variety.
