@@ ‘We want to ensure that more students study Mandarin…when we study anotherlanguage,we study another culture,another way of thinking…by studyingMandarin,we can gain an insight into one of the most amazing and inspiringcultures that the globe has ever seen．1The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the state of the field with respect tothe teaching and learning of Chinese in schools in England and to discuss the work ofthe IOE Confucius Institute for Schools and the issues it has been addressing aroundteaching materials,teacher supply and assessment for learners of Chinese．A briefoverview of provision made for the teaching of Chinese in Scotland and Wales and inthe United States will also be given．
