A phenol-degrading bacterium strain PA was successfully isolated from the petrochemical wastewater effluem.Based on the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, strain PA was characterized as a Gram-negative,strictly aerobic, nonmotile and short-rod shape bacterium which utilizes phenol as a sole carbon and energy source.16S rDNA sequence analysis revealed that this strain was affiliated to Acinetobacter calcoaceticus in the group of gamma-Proteobacteria.
