杆状病毒的一个重要特征是在其生活周期中能同时产生两种形态的病毒粒子:芽生型病毒粒子(Budded virion,BV)和包埋型病毒粒子(occlusion-derived virion,ODV).ODV介导病毒对昆虫的口服感染.ODV的囊膜蛋白对于病毒侵染宿主中肠细胞至关重要,但是关于ODV囊膜的形成机制迄今尚未明了.人们普遍接受的一个假设是:ODV的整合膜蛋白通过协同翻译整合到内质网,沿着内质网、外核膜和核孔膜这个连续的膜系统被运送到内核膜,内核膜的局部区域再往核质方向内陷出芽形成核内微囊泡,最后核衣壳从微囊泡处获得囊膜形成ODV.
