Cell response to wear particles of carbon/carbon composites in a hip joint simulator

　　A hip joint simulator was employed to predict the clinical wear behavior of carbon/carbon composites with testing conditions of a cross-path motion, a constant load and a lubricant of serum.The wear particles generated were isolated and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and three-dimensional profiler.Human osteoblast-like MG63 cells were employed to evaluate the biological responses of the wear particles by analyzing the cell morphology and the cell proliferation.The results showed that the wear particles of carbon/carbon composites had a size ranging from submicron to tens of micrometers with various morphologies.Osteoblasts co-cultured with the wear particles had different growth behaviors according to the size of the particles and exhibited a favorable relative cell proliferation rate ranging from 85% to 98%.Carbon/carbon composite wear particles had no detrimental responses for osteoblasts.
